The
Road I took
Packed my bags and headed off
In the right direction
Wasn’t long before
I forgot my intention
Feet kept walking
Mind rambled elsewhere
Where I wanted to be
Never seemed to be here
The urge to keep wandering
Took me far and wide
Searched every nook and cranny
For the perfect place to hide
I saw the wonders of the world
People from far off places
But every where I looked
Empty eyes in vacant faces
The home I sought evaded me
My limbs grew weak and tired
Listless mind grew panicky
And then…terrified
I fell down in an un-named spot
Looking to the sky
Couldn’t think another thought
Didn’t even try
Lying flat upon the ground
I watched a crow fly through the air
He landed close beside me
Smelling seasoned fare
I guess I was delusional
Could have sworn I heard him say
“What you doing in these parts fella
You must have lost your way
|
The road is long before you
The road is long behind
The place that you are looking for
This way you will not find”
I looked into his guileless eyes
Before he made me blind
In the darkness where I lay
The snake she did come hither
As she whispered in my ear
I couldn’t help but shiver
“What are you doing here friend?
This road’s not yours to travel”
She gave me a long hug and kiss
Together we unravelled
I heard the movement in the dirt
Before the hot breath licked my face
Her howl arose into the night
My heart began to race
The dog sat down beside me
With joy she wagged her tail
“I’ve tried so long to find you
Been following your trail”
“For ages you’ve been travelling
Along this winding track
But I am here, the love you lost
Come to bring you back”
I felt myself break open wide
And from that empty hollow
A final beat of ecstasy
As she took my heart and swallowed
